Data Minimisation

Collecting only the data needed to deliver value, nothing more.

Definition

Data minimisation is the principle of collecting and retaining only the data that is strictly necessary to achieve a clear, legitimate purpose. Rather than gathering everything “just in case”, organisations deliberately limit the scope, detail, and duration of data they work with.

This principle is central to many modern privacy regulations and also supports more efficient, sustainable systems. Less data means less to secure, less to process, and less to store over time.

Why Data Minimisation Matters for Ethical Analytics

Vistrall embraces data minimisation across its design. As described on Our Approach page, we focus on aggregated insight and avoid collecting personal identifiers by default. This reduces risk, simplifies compliance, and keeps analytics aligned with user expectations.

From a Sustainability perspective, data minimisation also reduces the energy and resources spent on storing and processing unnecessary information. It encourages leaner infrastructures and healthier digital ecosystems, making it a key part of both ethical and environmental responsibility.
